Russell is a graduate of Brooklyn College (CUNY) and Harvard University with a Masters in Education. He was appointed to Phillips Exeter Academy in 1987. Russell enjoys teaching the Harkness method, the centerpiece at Exeter as students realize their potential and become responsible for their own education. As a member of the Religion Department he teaches courses in religion, ethics, philosophy and psychology. He has advised The Legacy, the creative journal of the Afro-Latino Exonian Society; coached girls JV basketball, and served as dean of residential life, and interim dean of multicultural affairs. Russell is also the campus minister for Sumer School. He sees these roles as integral to his job as a “supportive presence” at the school.
Russell is married to Jackie, and has 4 grown children and 8 grandchildren. His interests include reading, listening to music, travel, Brooklyn history, and the fire service.
